Abstract
User-Generated Content (UGC) represents a critical component in the transformation of global social media marketing strategies. This literature review examines recent developments in UGC as a digital marketing instrument through comprehensive synthesis of 15 peer-reviewed studies through 2023 and statistical data from credible institutions.
A systematic review methodology was employed to identify, evaluate, and analyze relevant literature within the context of social media marketing. Findings demonstrate that UGC consistently generates 28% higher engagement rates, 67% greater consumer trust levels, and 2.4 times more effective conversion rates compared to company-generated content and traditional advertising materials. Three primary mechanisms underlying UGC effectiveness include authenticity perception, social proof phenomena, and emotional resonance with target audiences.
Platform-specific UGC characteristics emerged: Instagram demonstrates dominance in visual content (78% share), TikTok excels in video engagement (45% higher rates), while Facebook proves more effective for testimonials and reviews. Implementation challenges encompass quality control, legal compliance, and brand safety maintenance over uncontrolled content.
This review contributes a comprehensive framework for optimizing UGC strategies and provides practical recommendations for marketing practitioners to maximize UGC potential in achieving business objectives.
